1 This long list of popes from the apostle Peter to Sylvester (314â335) is missing one pope, Pius I, who was Bishop of Rome from c. 140 to c. 154. His absence is noteworthy since, according to tradition, he was born in Aquileia, a city that has a central role in the narration. Given the repetition of similar words and formulaic expressions in this list, it is possible that the name of Pius I got lost because of homoeoteleuton (the text of the critical edition is a combination of the readings of V and Z, which made the same mistake in their own lists), or the author simply made an error. Both manuscripts also made the same error of listing one pope, Anacletus, also known as Cletus, as two different persons.
